Face
Face makeup that respects your structure
Base makeup is not about erasing your face. It evens the canvas so blush, bronzer, and highlight sit where they lift. These principles work with drugstore or luxury formulas.
Skin prep is face makeup
Hydrated skin accepts pigment evenly. Cleanse gently, layer moisturizer from thinnest to thickest, and wait a few minutes before primer. If you wear SPF in the morning, let it set. Rushing causes pilling under foundation. Read our skin prep layering guide for dry, oily, and combination routines.
Foundation and undertone
Match at the jaw where face meets neck in natural light. Surface tone shifts with sun; undertone usually stays stable. When in doubt, compare two shades half on each cheek and check in a window, not bathroom LEDs. The foundation shade finder narrows depth and undertone families before you swatch in store.
Color correction before concealer
Neutralize redness with sheer green primer on cheeks, not thick green all over. Under-eye circles often need peach or salmon correctors on medium to deep skin and pink-peach on fair cool tones. Follow with skin-tone concealer. See color correction basics.
Blush and contour placement
Blush lifts when swept from the apple toward the temple. Contour belongs in hollows, temples, and along the jaw, not as stripes on the cheek apple. Face shape changes where those zones read best. Use the face shape detector and makeup by face shape page for tailored maps.
Setting without cake
Powder where you get oily; setting spray over the whole face to meld layers. Over-powdering every zone creates rebound shine on oily skin by midday. Setting powder vs spray explains zone strategy.
Face-focused guides
- Face Primer vs Makeup Primer: What Actually Matters
Primers can smooth texture, extend wear, or add grip. You do not need one in every routine. Here is when to skip, when to color-correct, and how to layer without pilling.
- Should You Wash Your Face Before Makeup?
Clean skin helps makeup adhere evenly, but over-cleansing strips barrier lipids. Match your wash to your skin type and time of day.
- Skin Prep Layer Order Before Makeup
Hydration, wait times, and SPF placement determine whether foundation sits smoothly or separates by midday.
- Color Correction Before Concealer
Neutralize redness, darkness, and sallowness with peach, green, and lavender correctors. Less is more.
- Undertone vs Surface Tone: Stop Matching Wrong
Your summer tan changes surface tone; undertone usually stays the same. Match foundation to both.
- Contour Placement for Round and Soft Faces
Sculpt with shadow where bone structure naturally recedes. Skip muddy stripes on the cheek apple.

- Face Shape Detector
Upload a front-facing photo to estimate whether your face reads oval, round, square, heart, oblong, or diamond based on forehead, cheek, and jaw proportions.
- Face Symmetry Test
Compare left and right halves to spot subtle asymmetry in brows, eyes, and mouth. Almost everyone has it, and heavy makeup rarely fixes it well.
- Face Ratio Calculator
Measure vertical thirds (hairline to brow, brow to nose, nose to chin) and horizontal fifths to see how classical proportions apply to your features.
- Forehead Shape Analyzer
Evaluate forehead width and height relative to cheekbones to suggest brow shapes and hairline-contouring techniques that harmonize with your upper face.
- Jawline Shape Detector
Classify soft, angular, tapered, or square jaw tendencies to guide bronzer placement and blush direction without over-sculpting.
- Cheekbone Analyzer
Locate cheekbone height and prominence from landmarks to place blush, bronzer, and highlight where they lift rather than flatten your face.
Face makeup FAQ
Usually the undertone is off. Cool foundation on warm skin reads ashy. Match at the jawline in daylight and adjust depth when you tan, not undertone.
